Basically the signal coming into the amplifier is too large. The amplifier can only handle a gain of about 70 dB. It becomes saturated, heats up and suffers a lost in gain. RFI is created when this happens. Carl hopes that by moving the band-pass filter the signal can be attenuated to some degree. Carl only worked on the A channel.
