- 1973 a group of engineers were selected to construct the basic ideas of
the spectacular telescope
- Four years later, Congress authorized funding for the project
- In 1981 the precision-ground mirror was completed, and the optical
assembly was delivered for integration in 1983
- Two years later, the assembly of the spacecraft was completed

- The Hubble Space Telescope (HST) was launched from Kennedy Space Center
with the STS-31 mission of the Space Shuttle Discovery on April 24, 1990
- Within the first months a defect was found in the main mirror that
reduced the ability to focus
- A service mission was carried out in December 1993 using the space
shuttle Endeavour

- The HST examines objects billions of light years away, causing light
captured by the Hubble to be from events that occurred billions of years
ago
- When the HST captures images from deep into the universe, many
surprising discoveries are made; ex. “stellar baby boom”

- Data from the Hubble has revealed much information that was previously
unknown
- Existence of oxygen on Europa
- Flat disks of dust and gases have been revealed that are thought to be
the precursors for planet formations
- Spotted storms on Neptune, Jupiter, and Mars and volcanic eruptions
from Io have been shown
- Data concerning star death and quasars

- Hubble could be said to be one of the most influential projects that
NASA has taken on in all of its history
- By using these discoveries, NASA and the human race alike have taken the
challenge not to limit the human spirit by only focusing on terrestrial
matters
